ABOUT SHOW STOPPERS

Show Stoppers brings together our most inspiring musical theatre performers in a celebration of talent in our country, giving the audience an insight into the people behind the voice.

 

The night is set in the historic surrounds of the Bank on Collins in Melbourne with various dining packages available to over 250 guests including VIP experiences. With the event held on a Monday night those artists currently performing in the industry can be involved either as a performer or audience. 

 

Hosted by the unparalleled Michael Snell, it is our aim to celebrate the talent in the musical theatre world, break down the walls between the audience and performer and really learn something about the individuals on stage. 

 

Each event will showcase 6 artists with one rising star all singing the big show stoppers from the musical theatre world. These artists are seriously talented, and you don’t have to wait till the end of Act 1 to get the show stopping moment…. The night is full of them! The show is fun and engaging and gives the audience some insight into the lives of these professionals.

Mike Snell - Host/ Co Producer

Mike kick started his Musical Theatre career alongside Hugh Jackman in the Australian Arena production of, The Boy From Oz.

 

A succession of musicals followed, including Miss Saigon, Wicked, Hairspray, We Will Rock You and Legally Blonde where he earned himself a Helpmann Award Nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as, Kyle the UPS Delivery Guy.

 

Mike then went on to work with one of his favourite directors, Baz Luhrmann on the Australian production of, Strictly Ballroom. In 2017 Mike scored the hattrick with The Production Company performing in Hello, Dolly (Rudolf), Jesus Christ Superstar (Simon of Zealots) and Brigadoon (Sword Dancer).

 

He is fresh off the stage from Disney’s Aladdin and cannot wait to bring you some of the best Show Stoppers musical theatre has to offer.

Jackie Scott - Founder/ Producer

Nominated for Australian of the Year in 2015 for outstanding work in dance education, Jackie is incredibly dedicated to the performing arts industry and the training of young people. Jackie holds a Bachelor of Arts (Dance & Drama), Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Arts Honours (under scholarship) all from Deakin University. She was awarded the Vice Chancellor's Award from Deakin University for outstanding creative product. She also holds many further qualifications including Diploma of Dance, Diploma of Musical Theatre, Certificate IV in TAE and further fitness qualifications.

 

Jackie is the founder of Keep Kids Safe In Dance, a groundbreaking organisation that protects young people from child abuse in the dance industry. Jackie leads workshops, outreach and support programs, awareness campaigns, seminars and research and development in all fields associated with safety in dance. 

 

Jackie has trained thousands of students in many disciplines over 3 continents for 25 years. Jackie was the director of The Ministry of Dance in North Melbourne adding 5 nationally recognised qualifications to scope. Within this role she co-directed and produced all performances to a professional level, presenting full length dance and musical theatre works at venues such as the Crown Palladium and The Palais Theatre St KIlda.

 

Prior to this, she was the Education Manager at Ausdance Victoria, the Peak Body for Dance in Australia.

 

In 2001, Jackie moved to London and worked at Holloway school as Head of dance and Drama and head of the Gifted and Talented programme as part of the senior management team. 

 

As part of the senior management team she was intimately involved in many child abuse cases and worked closely with social services, the police, families, inclusion teams and other stakeholders. In 2012 Jackie founded and directed the Holloway Dance Company in London, a hip hop fusion dance company that performed at many high profile events including live shows on the West End, Major London events, television and educational seminars.

 

Jackie has 37 years of performance experience including television, festivals, conventions, educational events, competitions and world dance events. She has vast performance, choreographic and educational experience working with prolific choreographers and companies on various projects including Dance Theatre of Harlem, Electric Boogaloos (USA), The Ballet Boys, Mathew Bourne, Cando Co, Push, Tommy the Clown, Mark Morris Dance Company.

 

Jackie has choreographed and directed countless high profile performances both live and for television including the Australian Dance Awards, the NMFC Football Breakfast (Channel 7), Breakfast with the stars, Australia’s Got Talent (semi finalist), XChange (BBC Studios UK), Celebrity Fame Academy (CBBC TV UK), Mathew Bourne’s New Adventures.

 

Jackie has had extensive industry experience including; judge at various high profile events including Step off Hip Hop Dance Competition, member of the Advisory Board for the Nationally Recognised Qualification Diploma of Musical Theatre, adjudicating various exams and competitions, numerous contributions to dance magazines and articles, implemented preschool dance programs in Melbourne, member of the panel for the Islington Dance Teachers Network London, UK, course Advisory Board for the dance department Deakin University and Deakin Uni Golden Key National Honours Society Member.

Complementing Jackie’s passion and application in the Arts is her solid business experience. Her career to date includes roles such as Venue Manager, Sales and Marketing Manager and Functions and Events Manager for EDG (Entertainment Development Group) 1997-200.

Ruva Ngwenya

Ruva is an African Australian Musician who has been tearing up stages across Australia since she decided music is what she was born to do.

 

Being introduced to music at a young age through violin she found her passion in creating music.

 

after being cast in her first high school musical she was accepted into the Victorian College Of Arts Secondary school where she studies both classical and Jazz Vocals.

 

Attending Melbourne's University's VCA was one of the highlights of her musical education. She met fellow performers and was pushed to new boundaries with her musicianship .

 

She was then cast as leading character in the Australian Tour of THE LION KING where she performed in all major cities to over 1.7 Million people! She has since continued to work professionally in the musical Theatre industry in shows like WE WILL ROCK YOU & DUSTY. 

 

Ruva was recently cast in the new music Beautiful which will be opening at Sydney's lyric theatre in 2017.

Jayme-Lee Hanekom

Jayme-Lee most recently appeared in the Australian cast of The Book of Mormon and understudied the role of Nabulungi.

 

Jayme-Lee graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2014 and completed a Diploma of Music Theatre at Jason Coleman’s Ministry of Dance in 2016.

 

Having begun performing at an early age, Jayme-Lee secured the role of Young Nala in Disney’s The Lion King in 2005. Her other musical theatre credits include Stage Art’s 2016 revival of In The Heights and Stage Art’s 2016

 

Australasian Premiere of The Color Purple for which she was nominated for a Green Room Award for her portrayal of Celie. Jayme-Lee has performed as the Leading Lady in Jason Coleman’s cabaret show, The Rhythm of Life and has toured Australia with Nickelodeon’s Paw Patrol Live! in the role of Zuma. Jayme-Lee was a 2017 finalist for the Rob Guest Endowment Award.

Rob Mills

A popular singer, presenter, actor, MC and media personality. Rob has carved himself out a successful career spanning over 15 years with many high profile credits to his name.

 

Rob is currently a series regular in Neighbours,  Australia’s longest-running drama, where he plays the ever troubled Finn Kelly - a role created for him. He has relished the opportunity to step off the musical theatre stage for the first time in a decade to flex his acting muscles.

 

Whilst filming Neighbours, he was also starring in the off-Broadway smash hit comedy “Puffs”,  at the Alex Theatre. His first non-musical stage performance to uproarious success and rave reviews.  But the songs were never far off, completing a successful cabaret season with iconic Australian performer Rhonda Burchmore in Bang Bang! headlining the Brisbane Festival.

 

He has recently completed a 30 show national tour of ‘Puttin’ On The Ritz’ on the back of the stage show Jesus Christ Superstar where he played the title role of Jesus. In 2016, he starred in in Ghost the Musical to glowing reviews in the lead role of Sam , a role made famous by Patrick Swayze in the 1990 hit feature film.

 

For the last ten years, Rob has worked tirelessly to establish his impressive credentials in musical theatre. When he first heard the music from the musical Wicked, he vowed to be a part of the show when it came to Australia in 2008. He was then thrilled to be cast in the role of Fiyero in this highly successful Broadway blockbuster and played over 500 shows in Melbourne and Sydney, receiving rave reviews and establishing Rob as one of Australia’s favourite leading men. His credits include playing Danny in a national tour of Grease (2013), Legally Blonde, The Last Five Years (nominated for Best Musical Production at the 2012 Sydney Theatre Awards), Into the Woods and Hair.

 

Rob’s combination of irreverent personality, an innate ability to ad lib and an instinctive knowledge of ‘where the camera is’ means he’s the perfect MC and proven television presenter and host. Rob shone as the Host of Young Talent Time (2012 ) and has featured as himself in a myriad of shows, pre-recorded and live, from Celebrity Apprentice (2013), to Dirty Laundry Live, The Project, Dancing With The Stars (2009), Spics and Specs, Postcards and The Footy Show.

With his musical performances, Rob has the ability to capture an audience and take them along for the ride no matter what the setting, theme or event. A flexible attitude and an understanding that each client has a different set of needs, Rob is able to play to an intimate private group or to large audiences of all ages.

 

During the 2015 cabaret season, Rob launched to rave reviews his first one-man cabaret show ‘Rob Mills is Surprisingly Good’, a show inspired by the ‘surprisingly good’ reviews he always manages to receive from critics and audiences and the show received a nomination for Best Cabaret Production at the Sydney Theatre Awards. 

 

Rob is focused on extending his acting credits both on stage and the small screen, along with his current role on Neighbours he played Chris Bell in the critically acclaimed Peter Allen Story: Not the Boy Next Door (2015). His current television acting credits include Neighbours (2017 - ongoing)  Winners & Losers (2011), Underbelly – Razor (2011).

 

Developing his love of the stage and performing whilst studying Music & Drama at Brentwood Secondary College, Rob first came to the nation’s attention in 2003 as a finalist on the first series of Australian Idol.

 

Following this success and a national Idol Tour, he was soon signed to BMG. His first single Ms. Vanity debuted at #6 on the Australian charts, reaching Gold status. His debut album Up All Night was released in June 2004, featuring seven co-written tracks.

 

Rob is a proud Ambassador for Mazda Australia, ACMF (Australian Children’s Music Foundation) and Supporter of Reach and RUOK day.

Imogen Moore

Originally from Hobart, Imogen is a 2014 graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts, BFA Music Theatre.

 

In 2017, Imogen was a Rob Guest Endowment Finalist, winning $1500. She also made her Production Company debut as Minnie Faye in Hello Dolly! starring Marina Prior. She toured Australia playing the Leading Lady in A Fine Romance: The Magic of Fred Astaire (JTM Productions), and appeared in Elevate! (The Dizzy Biz Alliance), a show she co-wrote. Imogen also appeared as Chloe in short film Dream Home for the Jewish International Film Festival.

 

Imogen’s professional debut was in Anything Goes (Opera Australia, John Frost), where she understudied and performed the role of Hope Harcourt. Other stage credits include backing vocalist in Disney Under the Stars In Concert (Live Nation), Follies in Concert (Storeyboard Entertainment), two productions of Avenue Q (Prince Moo Productions and Trifle Theatre Co.) and originating the lead role in Antarctica – A New Musical (Tas Theatre Co. and Sundog Productions). Imogen has also toured Australia and South Africa playing Daphne Blake in Scooby Doo Live! (Life Like Touring).

Martin Croft

Martin’s has had a lifelong career in music theatre and opera, as a performer, director, musical director, writer, teacher, event manager and producer.

He has starred in most of the mega musicals -  Cats, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera and Miss Saigon here and in America and the west end.

Martin is currently associate director (Australia) of the hugely successful come from away and recent credits as associate/resident director are Jersey Boys, Kinky Boots, The Addams Family, Boeing Boeing, Les Miserables, The Boy from Oz, Oliver and he was nominated for a green room award as director of lifelike touring’s celebrated production of City of Angels.

He has also directed numerous award ceremonies, concerts,  workshops, cabarets and plays both in Australia and overseas.

Kohan van Sambeeck - Pianist

Kohan graduated with First Class Honours in Classical Music from The West Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2016, majoring in piano. His theatre credits include Aladdin (Disney Theatrical), The Wizard of Oz (Gordon Frost Organisation), Les Miserables (Michael Cassel Group), Wicked (Gordon Frost Organisation), The Lion King (Disney Theatrical), The Sound of Music (Gordon Frost Organisation) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (TML Enterprises).

 

In 2014, Kohan performed with Hugh Jackman at the launch of the Jackman Furness Foundation for the the Performing Arts. Some other highlights include performing with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and appearing as a guest conductor with the Perth Symphony Orchestra.

Stephen Mahy

Stephen graduated from Waapa ( Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts ) in 2006 and was already cast by Louise Withers and associates in Cameron Mackintosh’s “Miss Saigon” Australian tour in 2007-2008.

 

Throughout 2008 Stephen performed in starring roles for The Production CO in “Follies”, Guy Nobles “Karaoke the musical” and for the Kookaburra theatre co in “Little Women”.

 

From 2009-2011 Stephen was honoured to step into the shoes of “Bob Gaudio” in the original Australian cast tour of “Jersey Boys”.

 

Late in 2012 Stephen landed in the top 12 of channel 10’s “I will survive” and took the bus all the way from Sydney to Alice springs. A trip of a lifetime he’ll never forget.

 

In 2013 he was in “Spank” the fifty shades of Grey parody before donning the leather jacket to play Kenickie in “Grease” produced by the Gordon Frost Organisation.

 

Following that tour in 2015 he played Brad Majors in “The Rocky horror show”, Sky in “Mamma Mia!” 2017/2018 Australian tour. Fosco and Frank Jnr in “Saturday Night Fever” 2019. Stephen is delighted to be back at Chapel off Chapel in his new home town Melbourne to play John Kelly in “The Beautiful Game“.
